Zune: Half and Half…
So it’s been a week since the Zune was launched. I’ve read so many reviews my head is about to explode. I will sum this up and keep it as short as possible.
From everything I have read:
Hardware (Zune Device) = Great
Software (Zune Marketplace) = Awful
The Zune has a lot of potential, even with this launch product. The device and the potential features due to the giant screen and the WiFi make it easily software update-able. The amount of potential cool features that could be introduced by Microsoft is almost limitless. Microsoft seems to be taking the same route they did with the Xbox 360; launch with a mediocre product and improve it through updates over time. I worry about this strategy with the Zune because unlike the 360, which was the only next gen console at the time, the Zune is in an overly saturated market with heated competition. Microsoft is going to really have to improve the feature set to give the Zune any chance.
To sum it up, I suggest waiting to buy a Zune to see if Microsoft really delivers on its potential feature set. The Zune Device itself is really going to have to be amazing to override the software (if you havent heard, check any Zune review site — the Zune Marketplace sucks).
Half thumbs up, half thumbs down…
Its going to have to be a little better than that to beat software/device packages like the ipod and others.
I wish Zune worked with iTunes…. or even Windows Media DRM for that matter…. sigh….
p.s. I know I havent posted in a long time. Feels good to be back!
